TREATING TIPS - We all know that feeding our friends with paws table scraps isn't very good for them or their waistlines, but certain foods can actually be toxic! Raisins and grapes have recently been shown to be bad news for your beloved barkers. Enough of the little things can cause kidney failure! Yikes! Don't feed your friends onions either because they can be toxic to dogs and kitties. Onions may taste great on a burger for puppy parents, but can cause a fatal anemia in our friends with paws. Most of us already know that chocolate can be very toxic to dogs. The darker the chocolate, the more toxic it is to your friend with paws. For example, just 1 ounce of baking chocolate could be fatal to a 10 pound dog! It would take 5 pounds of milk chocolate to have the same effect. Regular dark chocolate is made from cacao beans, the source of high levels of Theo bromine, a caffeine-like substance. White chocolate, on the other hand, is made from cocoa butter, which is safe for dogs. That same 10 lb dog would have to eat more than 50 lbs of white chocolate for it to be toxic. Just because your friend with paws wants to eat it doesn’t mean he should. While we have taken great love and care in the development of our treats we do suggest that you remember they are just that…… Treats!
BONE MEAL – is an excellent source of calcium, need we say more? Most of the body's calcium is stored in the bones and teeth, where it is instrumental in keeping them strong. The small amount of calcium circulating in the bloodstream helps to produce the hormones and enzymes that regulate energy release, digestion, and metabolism. Calcium also facilitates the movement of nutrients across cell membranes. In addition, this mineral helps nerve cells to communicate normally, aids muscle contraction, and promotes blood clotting. To perform these essential functions, the body simply takes as much calcium as it needs from the bones. Unfortunately, if there's too little calcium in your friend’s diet to replenish this supply, his bones will eventually suffer, and become porous, weak, and prone to breaking. Unlike other pet bakeries we do not use feed grade bone meal. We use only 100% pure, human grade bone meal derived from cattle raised in the United States. Our sterilized and sanitary Bone Meal is tested for heavy metals such as lead and aluminum to assure the lowest levels possible. We use only the best because we know your friend with paws deserves the best!
BREWERS YEAST – we use yeast grown on sugar beets which are known to absorb nutrients from the soil faster than almost any other crop. As a result this yeast is exceptionally rich in selenium, chromium, potassium, magnesium, copper, manganese, iron, zinc and other factors natural to yeast. Brewers yeast is not only high in B complex vitamins; it also acts as a natural flea preventative. That gives it unanimous paws up with all our canine friends!
CAROB - the cocoa substitute comes from the pods/seeds of the carob tree which is a member of the legume (pea) family grown in Mediterranean areas. Carob has been coined the healthy alternative to chocolate. Unlike chocolate, carob is virtually fat-free, low in calories, and free from the stimulants caffeine and theobromine, which can be fatal to our canine friends. Carob is 80% protein and contains vitamins A, B1, B2, B3 and D. Carob contains as much vitamin B1 as asparagus, the same amount of niacin as lima beans, lentils or peas, and more vitamin A than eggplant, asparagus, and beets. It is also high in calcium, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, and iron.
CARROTS - are a root vegetable rich in vitamin A and potassium. They are healthy and naturally sweet and can be given to your dog raw or even better; you can give them treats which contain carrots. The carrots in our treats are shredded and because they are cooked, they have higher levels of two antioxidants: beta-carotene and phenolic acids.
FLAXSEED – is used in every treat we make, with the exception of Jelly’s Freebie. Why? Did you know that flax seed is nature’s richest plant source of Omega-oils? First cultivated in Europe, the plant's brown seeds were regularly used to prepare balms for inflamed skin. Rich in essential fatty acids (EFAs) flaxseed oil has earned a solid reputation for treating a range of ailments, from heart disease to lupus. The EFAs in flaxseed oil are its key healing components. EFAs are particularly valuable because the body needs them to function properly, but can't manufacture them on its own. Essential fatty acids work throughout the body to protect cell membranes, keeping them efficient at admitting healthy substances while barring damaging ones. Flaxseed is an excellent source of alpha-linolenic acid also known as an omega-3 fatty acid. Like the omega-3s found in fish, it appears to reduce the risk of heart disease and numerous other ailments. Flaxseed oil is an excellent source of omega-3s. That means your friend with paws can look forward to a healthy heart, healthy skin and a healthy coat!
GARLIC - acts as a natural antibiotic, helps boost the immune system, and regulates digestion. It also acts as a detoxifier. It is an excellent supplement to give to dogs with immune problems, digestive upsets, or infections. Garlic appears to be a very safe herbal remedy - stimulating liver function, flushing out toxins, and reducing free radicals that can cause cancer. Garlic also acts as a natural flea preventative, again unanimous paws up from all our canine friends! We use only freshly minced garlic to get the most bang for the bite. It is important to use caution when using garlic as high quantities can be toxic. This is definately a case of more is not better!
PARSLEY - is a natural cancer inhibitor and tonic. It helps boost the body's overall functioning and clears the bloodstream and liver of toxins. It also helps relieve “dog breath”.
PEANUTS/PEANUT BUTTER - although commonly thought of as a nut, peanuts are actually legumes and belong to the same family as the bean and pea. The peanut is the seed of a plant believed to have originated in South America, although some sources believe it was China. In actuality, peanut butter does not contain any butter, but does contain at least 90% peanuts. Peanut butter is a good source of niacin and folic acid (they help convert food to energy) and a great source of vitamin E. It is also a super source of Biotin which is said to help repair thin, splitting nails and will also aid your friend with paws in developing a luxurious coat. We use only the highest quality, organic peanut butter containing only peanuts and palm fruit oil.
SUNFLOWER SEEDS - Sunflower seeds are an excellent source of vitamin E, the body's primary fat-soluble antioxidant. Vitamin E travels throughout the body neutralizing free radicals that would otherwise damage fat-containing structures and molecules, such as cell membranes, brain cells, and cholesterol. By protecting these cellular and molecular components, vitamin E has significant anti-inflammatory effects that result in the reduction of symptoms in asthma, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis, conditions where free radicals and inflammation play a big role.
